Congo in Conversation

A Greener World

| The Fondation Carmignac wishes you all the best for 2021 and is pleased to present the collaborative reportage Congo in Conversation in an outdoor exhibition, in partnership with the City of Paris.

The 11th Carmignac Photojournalism Award – which, this year, focuses on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – was awarded to British-Canadian photographer Finbarr O’Reilly. His reportage started in January 2020, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Due to the swiftly worsening global health situation and the gradual closing of international borders, Finbarr O’Reilly and the Award team reframed their approach to this work in the face of the crisis. One laureate’s project turned into a collaborative reportage with fifteen Congolese photographers.

Together, these photojournalists reveal communal ideas about African women, beauty, and fashion, leading to a deeper exploration of self-esteem and self-confidence in a post-colonial context. They brave the front lines of conflict and examine the challenges of living through a pandemic while subsisting in an informal economy where access to water and electricity is severely limited. They report on the environment, youth activism, and protests by opposition supporters and human rights advocates, while depicting a cautiously optimistic contemporary DRC.

Carmignac Photojournalism Award

In 2009, while media and photojournalism faced an unprecedented crisis, Édouard Carmignac created the Carmignac Photojournalism Award to support photographers in the field. Directed by Emeric Glayse, it funds annually the production of an investigative photo reportage on human rights violations, environmental and geostrategic issues in the world.

Selected by an international jury, the laureate receives a €50.000 grant, enabling them to carry out an in-depth research in the field, with logistical support from Fondation Carmignac. The latter presents a traveling exhibition and the publication of a monograph upon their return.

Previous editions have focused on Gaza (Kai Wiedenhöfer), Pashtunistan (Massimo Berruti), Zimbabwe (Robin Hammond), Chechnya (Davide Monteleone), Iran (Newsha Tavakolian), French Guiana (Christophe Gin), Libya (Narciso Contreras), Nepal (Lizzie Sadin), the Arctic (Yuri Kozyrev and Kadir van Lohuizen) and the Amazon (Tommaso Protti).

Fondation Carmignac

Created in 2000 by Édouard Carmignac, Fondation Carmignac is a corporate foundation founded on two main strands: its contemporary art collection that comprises more than 300 works and the Carmignac Photojournalism Award, an annual award that has supported the production of an investigative report since 2009.

Led by Charles Carmignac, the foundation is dedicated to supporting contemporary creation and sharing its collection with the public. In June 2018, Fondation Carmignac opened an exhibition space, Villa Carmignac, and a sculpture garden inspired by the surrounding listed national park on the Mediterranean island of Porquerolles, France. Visitors are invited to discover temporary exhibitions, in situ commissions and a programme of cultural activities and performances.
